Endirholm: Endir City: Arcane Academy
There are many towers in the City of Scholars but only one claims the name Babylon. Though its name might be Babylon, it is most often simply referred to as the Arcane Academy for that is what it is. Housed in its grand halls are the teaching facilities and classrooms of the only organized school of magic in the western world.
Babylon is not the only tower that is part of the Arcane Academy; three more towers surround it and the four are in fact connected by bridges and walkways spanning the open air. The shortest yet widest of the auxiliary towers is the Librarium Sanctum, the greatest library outside of Ayleid. The second tallest and thinnest tower is in fact the College of Conjuration’s Campus and far enough away from the rest for its base to lie in the Purple District and not in the Academy District. The final tower is Skyrim, the Hanging Tower, and it has no base that touches the ground.
Students of the Arcane Academy range in nearly all ages, but it’s most common for 10 year olds to enter the Academy. There are four ranks the budding magicians have to go through before becoming a full Wizard. First they are Novices until they have learned enough to undergo the Gateway Ritual. Once they have survived that first test, they earn the title Neophyte and begin their true training in magic. Once they graduate from the academy and are allowed into one of the seven Colleges of Magic, they become Initiates instead. The last stretch of the training is done as an Apprentice under the personal tutelage of a full Wizard of their chosen College.
Areas of Notice:
-The Celestial Tower: This tower houses both the College of Conjuration as well as the exclusive Guild of Astronomy; a guild only open to full Wizards or students of the arcane arts. The tower is tall, only barely shorter than Babylon, and thinner than all its sisters. All along its height are tall grass windows or glass domes and within these rooms are telescopes and charts for studying the night sky. Indeed, many Purple Wizards have turned nocturnal after staying up through the night to study the floating Purple Ether and its effects on the night sky.
-Skyrim, the Hanging Tower: This tower is indeed floating about 700 feet above the ground, not supported by anything except its magic enchantments. The tower was a gift from the High Elves and used to float above their capitol along with its six siblings. Currently it houses the training areas and dueling arenas where magicians can use their powers without fear of collateral damage. It’s walls are made of a crystal-like stone that negates all magic and so any effect created within a room in the tower stays put in that room.
-The Librarium Sanctum: The stubbiest of the four towers and then blandest in appearance, the Librarium Sanctum houses the greatest library outside of Ayleid and also the headquarters of the League of Librarians. Every hall, hallway, room and even stairway is lined with shelves and every shelf is filled with books, manuscripts, scrolls or tomes. Intellectuals from near and far come to browse through the unique gathering of knowledge or to search for that ‘one’ book that will give them just what they need.
-The Main Hall: The monstrous size of it can be quite overwhelming for the fresh-year Novices that are greeted with it the first time they enter the Arcane Academy. Along its walls are alcoves holding statues of the 252 Magicians that founded the Arcane Academy, looking down at those who hurry across the mirror-like floor.
(Note: The Arcane Academy was created for anyone who wants to have a school-setting for their adventures. Just know that if you start out as a 10 year old Novice, you can’t graduate in just a couple of months. Making a student more-or-less locks you in the Arcane Academy unless your character runs away and becomes a Sorcerer/Sorceress)
